Larnaca Arrival and Orientation Information

Landing at Larnaca airport, you'll find a CTO office open for all arrivals -which means  pretty much around the clock - and ample exchange facilities, including two bank ATMs. Quite likely you'll hace a rented car awaiting you as part of a fly-drive arrangement; if not, there are half-dozen rental booths in the arrivals area. Municipal buses #22 or 24 (the ormer labelled "Makenzy- Tekkes-Airport") run into town up to eleven times daily in season (Mon-Sat 8am-6pm; not Wed or Sat pm), dropping you on Ermou. Alternatively, a taxi into town shouldn't cost much more than C£5 at day rates -as ever, make sure the meter is switched on.

Larnaca's street plan is confusing, with numerous jinks, one-ways and name changes, though the sea is always due east, with two north-south boulevards paralleling it. The Finikondhes or palm tree esplanade, officially Leoforos Athinon, has always been the focus of the tourist industry and, towards its north end, hosts a few important inter-city bus terminals. The large Platia phimokratias (often known by its English name, "King Paul Square", and still Vassileos Pavlou on most maps) is home to the not wildly helpful CTO office (Mon-Fri, 8..15am-2.30pm, Sat 8.15am-1.30pm, plus Mon, Tues, Thurs & Fri 3-6.15pm).

From here, Leoforos Grigori Afxendiou is the main avenue out to the Nicosia and Limassol roads. Running parallel to the sea front, Zinonos Kitieos leads south to the diagonal junction with Ermon and, via the alleyways of the bazaar, indirecdy to Platia Ayiou Lazarou, home to its ornate namesake church and more bus stops. Odhos Ayiou Lazarou, later Stadhiou, reaches the roundabout that gives onto both the Nicosia road and Leoforos Artemidhos to the airport and beyond along the coast.

For drivers the one-way system can prove to be a nightmare. Moreover, parking in the centre, on a pay-and-display basis, is pretty well confined to a large purpose-built structure on Valsamaki, about 200m inlad from the Finikoudes, plus a few open-air lots nearby -which may appear to be unattended, but as ever wardens appear suddenly to demand fees.
